Insurance Foundation Certificate
Introduction
The IFC is a recognised, stand-alone qualification in basic insurance principles, practice and general (non-life) insurance. It is the first step to becoming professionally qualified and can be used as an entry qualification into the Certificate of Insurance Practice (CIP), success in which qualifies for membership of the Society of Technicians in Insurance and use of the designatory letters MSTI. It can lead ultimately to the CII Fellowship and Chartered title.
The IFC replaced the Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) qualification in 1997. The CoP had two routes, one for general insurance and one for life insurance. The IFC has been specifically designed for people working in general (non-life) insurance. A new foundation qualification has been developed for those working in ife and pensions and details are available in the Financial Planning Certificate handbook.
Candidates in the Republic of Ireland should note that the Irish version of the Certificate of Proficiency is still available. Details are available in a separate handbook.
Candidates who were part way through the Certificate of Proficiency examinations should refer to the
transitional arrangements.
