Financial Planning Certificate

   Introduction

Increasingly, the public is expecting a high standard of advice to be given by practitioners. To meet this expectation it is essential that professional, dedicated and qualified advisers are available-people who are committed to raising standards. The FPC gives a good broad-based grounding in the financial services market, covering regulatory aspects, products, fact-finds and giving advice.

The overall aim of the FPC is to offer a qualification which demonstrates that the holder has a sound knowledge and understanding of the financial services sector and is able to apply this knowledge and understanding.

The FPC has been developed by the CII's exams division with help and advice from market practitioners to ensure that the exam is practical and relevant to the needs of the market.

The CII provides exams for the FPC at centres throughout the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

In-house exam sittings

Some employers arrange for exams to be taken at special private sittings. Before entering for the public exams, you should check with your training manager or supervisor to see if such arrangements apply to you. In-house exam sittings can only be arranged for organisations registered with the CII, and not for groups of individuals. There is a minimum session fee for each in-house sitting.

FPC and the regulatory system

The FPC has been adopted by the Financial Services Authority and certain other regulators as evidence of satisfying their benchmark knowledge requirements.

The CII cannot give you a ruling on your regulatory status. All such matters should be addressed to your regulator.

Structure of the FPC

Papers 1 and 2 have a precise syllabus content. Details are included in this handbook as is information on how the content will be tested. The syllabus for Paper 3 consists of a series of learning objectives which will test your ability to apply the knowledge acquired from Papers 1 and 2 to satisfy client needs. You are recommended to take the papers in numerical order.

You should note that the examinations are based on the syllabuses and not on any specific course materials.

The amount of time you need for study depends on your existing knowledge and your ability to study the subjects. However, as a guide you should allow at least 80 hours study for each subject.

The FPC is awarded to candidates who have achieved a satisfactory performance in all three papers.

Further details and an entry form are available on request from the CII's customer services centre at e-mail:customer.serv@cii.co.uk.
