Associateship / Certificate of Insurance Practice 2001

The Associateship (ACII) exam consists of 10 subjects - three from the compulsory core module and a further three compulsory subjects, one selected from each of three modules: management, technical and specialist. The four remaining subjects may be taken from the management, technical and/or specialist modules.

The exams are based on published syllabuses. You should familiarise yourself with the syllabuses as an integral part of your studying.

The exams are held twice a year. There is a three-hour written paper for each subject, comprising eight compulsory short-answer questions plus case study and essay questions. Most subjects include one compulsory case study question. The amount of choice depends on the subject being examined.

You will need to allow five to six hours' study a week over six months for each subject you take. You are recommended to take no more than two courses per session, but you may take as many as you wish.

Continuous assessment is available for all subjects within the Associateship.

Choosing your subjects

The selection of subjects will depend on the job you are doing; you are strongly advised to consult your employer or the education secretary of your local insurance institute before making your decision.

You are recommended to begin with the three core subjects, as the content of the subjects in the other modules depends to some extent on a knowledge of these. In addition to the compulsory core subjects, a pass in either subject 935 Principles and practice of management in insurance or 940 Accounting and finance for managers in insurance or 941 Accounting and finance for managers in insurance (with special reference to Lloyd's) is a compulsory requirement for the award of the Associateship.

Candidates must also complete at least one technical and one specialist subject.

The four remaining subjects needed to complete the Associateship can be selected from across the full range of subjects (except for those in the core module).

Subjects localised to Irish law and practice

Syllabuses covering Irish law and practice are available for certain long-term insurance, motor and liability subjects. Candidates in the Republic of Ireland are free to select the more appropriate of the UK or Irish options but may not take both versions of any one subject. For further details about these subjects, candidates in the Republic of Ireland should contact the Insurance Institute of Ireland, 39 45 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2.

Subjects with special reference to Lloyd's

Candidates are free to select a Lloyd's-specific version of a subject where this is available, but they cannot take both the Lloyd's and the more generally applicable version of any one subject.

Tuition

The CII provides learning materials for all ACII subjects. Options available range from a correspondence course with continuous assessment option, a self-study course and update service. Supplementary products including audio tapes, key fact cards and computer-based training are also available.

Designatory letters

If you are a member of the CII or eligible to become a member when you pass your final exam, you can apply to use the letters 'ACII' after your name.
