The Mortgage Advice Qualification

Demonstrating to the customer that you have the competence to give advice on mortgages and confirming you are truly professional in this area is, obviously, necessary for everyone advising the public on their selection of mortgage products. Undoubtedly, it is also in the commercial interests of any company distributing these products that their staff meet a well-validated standard.

The Mortgage Advice Qualification (MAQ) covers the most suitable residential mortgage product to meet a customer's needs. It tests your understanding of the related insurance and assurance products available and the concepts of servicing and reviewing mortgage arrangements depending on customers' different circumstances.

The Mortgage Advice Qualification has been developed by leading market practitioners for the Chartered Insurance Institute, the professional body for insurance and related financial services. The qualification is relevant to your job and is backed by one of the largest professional examining bodies in the UK.

The three-hour exam paper is in two parts. The first comprises 50 multiple-choice questions. The second consists of two case studies. One covers setting up new mortgage arrangements and the other the servicing of existing mortgages.

This qualification will

• demonstrate clearly that you have the relevant knowledge to give mortgage advice in accordance with the Council of Mortgage Lenders' code

• enhance customer confidence in your advice

• develop your career prospects by showing a personal commitment to high standards

• improve business for your company.

MAQ is not a qualification in the generation or management of mortgage products: it is explicitly and exclusively an adviser's qualification.

The Mortgage Code Compliance Board The MCCB has announced that one route by which mortgage advisers working for intermidiaries can comply with the MCCB's registration requirements is by holding both the CII's MAQ and Financial Planning Certificate.
